The Malaysian Society of Ophthalmology (MSO) was first formed in 1964 by pioneering Malaysian Ophthalmologists as a society within the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) designated as the MMA Ophthalmological Society (MMAOS). Over the following 45 years, the society grew in membership and activities under the umbrella of the MMA, promoting and advancing the speciality. With that, the MSO was formed and successfully registered with the Registrar of Societies on April 15, 2008. The MMAOS was dissolved on December 31, 2009.
As our predecessor society had done so well over the years, the MSO will continue to carry the flag for the profession of Ophthalmology in Malaysia, having taken over all the duties and functions of the MMAOS.
The Malaysian Society of Ophthalmology (MSO) has played a significant role in hosting major ophthalmology congresses in the past five years. These congresses include:
- APVRS (Asia-Pacific Vitreo-retina Society) Congress 2017 focused on vitreo-retinal diseases and surgery in the Asia-Pacific region. It brought together experts and professionals to discuss the latest developments and advancements in vitreo-retina-related topics.
- APGC (Asia-Pacific Glaucoma Congress) 2022. The APGC Congress focused on glaucoma, a common eye condition that can lead to vision loss if not properly managed. This congress brought together experts and professionals specialising in glaucoma to discuss the latest diagnostic and treatment strategies.
- APAO (Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology) Congress 2023. The APAO Congress is the largest and most prestigious ophthalmology conference in the Asia Pacific region. It covers a wide range of ophthalmological topics and serves as a platform for eye doctors to exchange knowledge and collaborate on research and advancements.
Hosting these congresses highlights Malaysia’s commitment to advancing ophthalmology and eye care in the Asia-Pacific region. It provides a valuable platform for professionals in these specialised fields to share their expertise, collaborate on research, and improve the quality of eye care for patients in the region and beyond. These events play a crucial role in promoting the exchange of knowledge and advancements in the field of ophthalmology.
