Tengku Ain Kamalden

Tengku Ain Kamalden, MBBS DPhil, is a clinician-scientist and active vitroretinal surgeon at the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She was awarded Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) for from Green Templeton College, University of Oxford, United Kingdom. She completed a vitreoretinal fellowship at the National University Hospital, Singapore (NUHS). In 2013, she was among 20 young clinicians worldwide for the Inter-Academy Medical Panel (IAMP) Young Physician Leader program in Berlin.  She undertook post-doctoral research at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar. She received a Research Award from the Global Ophthalmology Award Program (GOAP) in 2018 and a Young Investigator Grant from Alcon Research Institute (ARI) in 2019. She was recently awarded the bronze medal for the Asia Pacific Vitreoretinal Society (APVRS) Leadership Development 2019-2020 Program. She is an active member of the Asia Pacific Ophthalmic Trauma Society, the Asia Pacific Vitreoretinal Society, and the Malaysian Society of Ophthalmology. Dr. Kamalden was the head of the University of Malaya Eye Research Centre (2015-2019) and formerly an honorary senior lecturer position at the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom.

She has published over 40 peer-reviewed scientific articles and co-authored several book chapters. She has received several research fundings both nationally and internationally. Her research interests include retinal diseases, ocular trauma, and biomarkers of ocular diseases.
