Birsen has graduated from Ankara University medical school in 1977 and completed her sub-specialty also in Turkey. She is a Professor of Ophthalmology. She has worked as Chief of the Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Department since 1990 at biggest eye hospital “Beyoğlu Education and Research Eye Hospital” in Turkey, with 32 senior and 38 trainee doctors. She also has started the Ophthalmology Department at the new Istanbul City Training Hospital and served as director between March 2020 and March 2021.
She has performed more than 20,000 surgeries and educated over 100 trainee and 16 fellows from both Turkey and Other countries. As a result of these studies, more than 56,000 patients were formed in her archive.
She attended many national and international meetings as invited speaker. She has introduced many new surgery techniques in strabismus. She also has published over 70 articles in national and international journals and above 150 papers in transaction books.
She is a member of AAO, AAPOS, ISA, ESA, WSPOS, APSPOS; ASCRS, ESCRS and Turkish Ophthalmological (TOD), Greek Ophthalmological (PHOS) and Turkish Republics Ophthalmological (TCOD) Societies.
She has received Achievement Award (2019) from American Academy of Ophthalmology and Honor Award (2021) from American Academy for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.
Since 1995 she has worked as volunteer ophthalmologist and trainer in Bosnia-Herzegovina, India, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Nepal, Kyrgyzstan and Sudan.
