Dr Anu Mathew is trained in general ophthalmology (including cataract surgery) and also subspecialises in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus (eye turn/squint) in all age groups. 

Dr Mathew graduated from medicine at the University of Auckland, New Zealand in 2005. Her passion for working in developing countries and underserved populations ​led her to undertake clinical research studying the infectious eye disease trachoma. She was funded by the WHO to investigate​the presence of trachoma throughout the Pacific Islands. After being awarded a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Melbourne in 2010, she went on to undertake comprehensive ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. She was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists in 2015. 

Dr Mathew has undertaken ​further advanced training in strabismus and ​paediatric ophthalmology at the Royal Children’s Hospital, the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. 

Dr Mathew currently has public appointments at the Royal Children’s Hospital, and the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Her surgical expertise covers most areas of general ophthalmology, paediatric ophthalmology, and strabismus. 

Dr Mathew has also continued her work with underserved populations and makes regular trips to Indigenous communities with Lions Outback Vision.
